Dive the S.S. YONGALA Wreck with Yongala Dive, one of the world’s top dive sites. This famous wreck is located in the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, just 12 nautical miles away from our base at Alva Beach in Queensland, Australia.
The S.S. YONGALA sank in 1911 with the loss of all aboard creating one of Australia’s most intriguing maritime mysteries as she lay undiscovered for more than half a century.
This enchanted wreck has become home to an incredible array of marine life (see our photo gallery). Giant gropers hang beneath the stern, schools of giant trevally and cobia congregate around the wreck while sea snakes glide harmlessly past divers on their way to the surface. Spot turtles lazily feeding, gracefully sweeping rays and thousands of other creatures on the now coral-encrusted structure.
All this is a mere 30 minutes from shore after a fast and fun ride aboard our purpose built vessel the Yongala Express.
Watch the marine life video opposite to see why this dive site is voted as one of the top ten scuba dives in the world and is the number one dive in the Great Barrier Reef marine park.
Yongala Dive also offer a full range of dive courses from Open Water to Divemaster, why not continue your dive education whilst diving on the S.S.Yongala Wreck - check our dive Courses page for further information.

2011 S.S Yongala Wreck, 100 years on the sea bed
The Tributes to the 100 Year Anniversary were a great success, the Alva Beach Fun Day had a big turnout as did the dinner at the Yongala Lodge. The small ‘service’ we held inbetween the Memorial Dives on the 23rd March was a fitting tribute to the 122 people who lost their lives that fateful night.
