January- S.S. Yongala rides the storm

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Once again the S.S. Yongala has come through the storms Mother Nature has thrown at her……..after TC Yasi, some corals have been washed off the wreck and the steel plates, hatches and rivets have been exposed, this only makes divers feel as though they are viewing a whole new wreck! All the marine life are still happily living their lives as if the storms didn’t happen… as if they and the wreck are saying “Bring it on Mother Nature!” Dive trips are operating as usual so if you think you have seen all the Yongala has to offer come for another look…….you might get to see more than you ever have before!

Mantas galore

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

We’ve had brilliant weather and wildlife the last couple of months. Many manta interactions, curious shark rays and baifish balling the wreck with many predators feasting. We are running full every day so book early so you don’t miss out. We’ve started 2 trips a day on wednesdays and weekends and are still turning away people.

Groupers Everywhere

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Very good diving recently, extremely active wildlife with up to 4 huge Qld grouper patrolling either the stern or the bow daily.

Had some magnificent glass out days, and one day had zero! tidal movement (1 tide all day).

Check the photo (bit blurry), couple of grouper off bow with a turtle swimming down from top right

You should be here!!

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Times are good out at the wreck , blue water, negligible tides, and no wind.

Spots are available most days, if you’ve thinking coming, now’s the time.

Floods, no problems

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

The flooding last week closed the highways but the diving was great. Calm conditions and 15m plus visibility. The Qld groupers and rays are particularly active.

Sea Cucumber Attacks Shark!

Friday, January 11th, 2008

Not really, but there is so much life down there all the animals have to share space, and the Tawny shark got in the way. Massive schools of baitfish have brought even more life to the dive site, light winds of 5-10 kts that we are experiencing presently make the day even better.

Summer Lovin’

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Light winds all month so far, out everyday with full boats equals many, many smiling faces for diver’s experiencing the wreck for the first time. Average vis approx 15m and water temp 27 degrees C, all the usual inhabitants and mantas every second day.

Spawning Time

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

Everything from reef fish, coral & invertebrates were spawning on the Yongala this spring. Amazing numbers of critters even for the Yongala”s high standards. Had strong winds mid November that put us out of action with a very early season T.C. Guba.

The weather has gone sensational and it’s been like diving in the Coral Lake not Coral Sea, with plenty of close up Manta action. The water’s warm, come and dive as we approch Summer.

We have whales

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

Apart from some strong seasonal trade winds here and there winter has been great. Visibility has often been 25m plus and the whales are singing and joining the diver’s every now and then. A few early mantas have turned up and the usual throng of species have all been enjoying the sunny days. Water temp is slowly warming up after getting down to 22 celcius (freezing for us!), it’s a great time to dive the Yongala.
